FAQ
What is the difference between a producer and a distributor?
Produced by a producer, the movie is produced. The distributor distributes the movie. Producors have the option to sell movies directly to distributors or theaters. Distributors purchase movies directly from producers. Distributors then sell the movies to theaters, cable networks, and streaming services.
Distributors will need to negotiate with theatre owners about the location of their movies. This could mean that certain theaters may charge more for a particular movie than others. You should select a distributor that has multiple theaters if you want your movie seen as much as possible.
Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?
Indie filmmakers are assuming that distributors will be interested in their films.
Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.
But, it is very rare that this happens. Distributors often take advantage of independent filmmakers.
They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.
They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.
Distributors will also attempt to keep movies away from viewers until they have spent hundreds of dollars on popcorn, tickets, or candy.
They don't wish to lose those profits.
How much does it take to distribute a feature?
A distribution deal can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $150,000.
Theaters cost an average of $10,000.

How To
How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.
After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.
To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove you from the list.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. A star can be renominated after 10 years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.
Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?
The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
What happened the star thefts? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
