How To

How to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. A second letter confirms acceptance if the nominee accepts the nomination. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, if you were first nominated in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.

What happened to the stars that got stolen? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
