How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. After being approved, you will be issued a certificate stating your name, date and place of birth. It also includes information about your occupation, occupation and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.
Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will remove the name of your from the list.
How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?
When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Nominating you can be done by family members. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.
Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?
The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.
What happened with the stars that were stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
