The Blacklisted Hollywood Era

The Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research houses a number archival collections which contain documents from the blacklist era. These papers include Alvah's papers. He was a member of Hollywood Ten and was blacklisted because he refused to give evidence before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Alvah's papers include documents that document his writing career and his relationships with the Veterans of Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Additionally, the Bruce Rubenstein collection documents Bessie’s relationship with Veterans of Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

Viva Zapata

The 1950s saw the release of several political films based on real events. A Streetcar Named Desire. Both received critical acclaim. However, there was a general lack of respect for the Mexican revolutionary. Although the film's director, Elia Kazan, spent most of 1951 working in Mexico, the movie was not blacklisted in Hollywood. It even garnered a 6.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, which is more favorable than average.

Although the film is based upon a true story it also echoes Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath which inspired it. John Steinbeck's screenplay was based on the real-life story of Emiliano Zapata and the Mexican Revolution. Ultimately, the novel was a bestseller and was adapted into a popular motion picture. Steinbeck continued to write nonfiction after Viva Zapata! But his best screenplays are set Mexico. Steinbeck's filmmaking continued long after Viva Zapata! was blacklisted by Hollywood.

Man is on a tightrope

"Man on a Tightrope" in Hollywood is an anti-Communist film made in 1953. This anti-Communist film demonstrates how the Communist economic philosophy based on the belief that one individual is superior to the others can only lead toward disaster. This film shows just how unstable these policies can prove to be. One veteran circus owner learned this during the Great Purge. Stalin's forced collectivization policies and repression were well known in the west. However, Elia Kazan in Hollywood was treated like a criminal. This movie is almost personal to me.

The story of a circus performer balancing between artistic integrity and not upsetting authorities is the subject of another film, "Man on a Tightrope in Hollywood." Elia Kazan, the director, was not happy with the film's political intrusion and made the performance as personal as possible. Although Man on a Tightrope is a film from another time, it's still one of his best films.

At the Waterfront

On the Waterfront by Elia Kazan is a classic example in Method acting. It is also considered one of the best movies of the 1950s. The film examines how the mafia influences a union a longshoremen. It is known as the Reality Subtext of Hollywood and Terry Malloy's iconic scene is a highlight. Elia Kazan was the first Hollywood artist to testify in front of HUAC. His postwar films were critical towards the conservative demagoguery.

The Hollywood Red Scare was a time of growing anticommunist sentiment, and the blacklist acted as a tool of the government and film industry to discredit people who expressed political views or were critical of American culture. It also shaped Hollywood’s postwar culture. Many of the blacklist entries resulted from rumours. Any hint of suspicion could spell doom for a career.

Mo'nique

Mo'nique is no secret. She has been in the Hollywood game for years. It is not known why Mo'nique clashed with Black Hollywood Producers. The details don't add up to an innocent case. The star of the hit movie "Precious" won an Oscar for her role. It is not clear what caused her to disappear from the film industry. Although her outrageous comedy style won her many admirers, it is still unclear how she was blacklisted.

A number of people including actor Tyler Perry, and Mo'Nique are calling for an end the blacklisting scandal. The actress recently spoke out with The Hollywood Reporter to claim that her ex manager "blackballed” the actress after she won Oscar for "Precious." Winfrey and Tyler Perry denied blacklisting Mo'Nique. However, the actress believes she was unfairly attacked.

Can I create my own distribution organization?

No. A distributor is required to operate a distribution firm.

You don't have to distribute films from other people, but you must still follow certain rules.

You cannot, for instance, charge different prices at different theaters. And you can't charge different fees to different customers.

It is also against the law to sell your services or products to other companies.

It is called Hollywood.

D.W. Griffith created the first movie industry in California in 1887. It was named after its location in Los Angeles, which at the time was known as "Hollywood."

Because it was such a fascinating place, people kept coming back for more. People came from all parts of the country to see what was going on there.

Hollywood is still an integral part of American culture. We have movies and television shows, music videos, commercials and so on. They are all called Hollywood.

What's the difference of an indie movie and a foreign-language film?

Independent films are usually made by one filmmaker who makes all of the decisions.

On the other side, a foreign-language film is normally produced by an even larger production team.

They often hire actors, writer, and directors from abroad.

You can also find professional translators to make the dialogue sound natural.

Is there any Hollywood Walk of Fame without a fee?

Yes! To visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame, you don't need to pay anything. You will need a permit if you wish to take photographs. It costs $15 per person.

Bring a valid ID if your intention is to visit Hollywood Walk of Fame.

It depends on how long you plan to run your theatrical release.

If your film is going to be run for less then two weeks, one theater will suffice.

You will need at least two theaters if you plan to keep your film running for more than 2 weeks.

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

Because they love the work, distributors will likely buy their films.

However, this is seldom the case. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They also delay the release date for a low-budget film until the summer blockbuster movie season has begun.

Distributors try to keep films out of the hands of audiences until they've spent hundreds on tickets, popcorn, and candy.

They don't wish to lose those profits.
