How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.
You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.
You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.
Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will remove you from the list.
What age is required to become a HWOF star?
One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.
Why not just have stars on every street?
