How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.
