How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

A family member can nominate your name for a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant to honor those who contributed to film history.
