How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee reviews all the nominations before deciding whether or not they are approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues the Hollywood Chamber of commerce a check, payable to it. The check is sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old must one be to get a HWOF star

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves stole approximately 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
